It’s better to learn to service your skis with hand files first, then progress to using a machine edge tuner when you’re ready.

The answer is always “more often than you think”. Tuning keeps the edge of your skis sharp, improving performance and grip for better control, reducing the risk of accidents. if you race regularly, you should be tuning your skis every couple of training sesisons and definitely before every big race.
