What is the difference between slalom (SL) and giant slalom (GS) ski poles?
Slalom and giant slalom are two very different disciplines of slalom racing. Slalom is slower and more technique forcused, whilst giant slalom is more speed focused. Because the two types of races have different objectives, the type of pole used is different.
For slalom (SL), most skiers use a straight pole to allow for a more upright body position, letting you take quick and dynamic turns. Whereas because giant slalom (GS) is more speed focused, skiers spend more time in a tucked position. Bent GS poles are designed to fit the curve of the skier’s body and create a more areodynamic profile for faster speed.
In short, choose a straight pole for technique focused SL racing and a bent pole for speeding down the GS course.
How do I choose the correct length for racing poles?
Choosing the right length ski pole is based on the skier’s height as well as the discipline. For GS, you generally want a pole that’s 2-3 cms longer than your normal length for a better tuck position. For freestyle or deep powder conditions, choose a slightly shorter pole for better balance.
We recommend sizing poles in store unless you already know your pole length. To check a ski pole is the right size, put on your ski boots, then turn the pole upside down. Rest the handle on the floor and grip just below the basket. Your arm should comfortably sit with your elbow at a 90 degree angle (in a L shape). It’s important to size your ski poles whilst wearing your ski boots, as this is what you’ll be wearing when you ski, but your boots can add centimetres to your height and make your poles the wrong size. You’re more than welcome to bring your boots with you to our shop and wear them whilst trying different sized poles.
Should junior ski racers use bent GS poles?
Bent giant slalom (GS) poles are designed for aerodynamic performance and are generally not recommended for new racers who are still developing technique. Whilst your young skier is learning technique, keep them on a straight pole. Once they can confidently hit the gates and transition into a tuck position, you can progress them to a bent pole and start developing their speed – but the foundation of a good technique should always come first.
