What is the difference between “”Stubby”” gates and full-height Flex Poles?

Stubby gates are shorter and generally measure around 1m in height, whereas Flex Poles are the full race height of 1.8m. Flex Poles replicate race conditions directly and are used for training older racers to get used to realistic gate contact. Stubby gates are better for easing in younger racers or new ski racers who may have a fear of getting hit by the larger gates, helping them build confidence before progressing to full-height gates.

Are there specific FIS regulations for training gates?

The FIS requires that gates are full-height and meet the alternating red/blue colour requirements, but at lower club levels, coaches have a lot more freedom when it comes to placing gates and setting the course. Ideally, for race training, you should aim to replicate race conditions as much as possible to make it easier for your racers on the big race day.

How should a coach choose the right alpine drill bit for course setting?

When it comes to setting a ski course, a normal drill bit just won’t do it.
