If you’ve spent any time at a ski racing event, you’ve probably spotted a few people wearing a Dryrobe. They’re those oversized, impossibly cosy coats that everyone and their dog seems to be wearing (we’re not kidding, there’s a Dryrobe for dogs)

This weatherproof changing robe has become essential kit for ski racers. Whether you’re standing at the top of the course waiting to compete or watching from the sidelines, a Dryrobe might just be the smartest investment you make this ski season.

What Exactly Is a Dryrobe?

First launched in 2010 and designed by British surfer Gideon Bright, the first ever Dryrobe was invented by Bright’s mother to let her son keep warm and get changed after surfing.   Since then, materials and technologies have improved to create the Dryrobe we enjoy today, beloved by everyone from Team GB medallists to dog walkers who just want to stay warm   and dry.

The Dryrobe Advance range is prefect for skiing! It combines a waterproof outer shell with an insulative synthetic lambswool lining, creating the perfect barrier against whatever weather the mountain brings.

Why Ski Racers Absolutely Need a Dryrobe

1) Staying Warm Between Runs

Race suits are designed for performance, not insulation. Whilst a super-thin, skintight race suit might give you the aerodynamic performance to speed down the run, you’ll be wishing for a cosy coat as soon as you stop moving. This is where skiing becomes #dryrobeterritory.

The fleece lining is specially designed provide insulation and to wick away moisture; remember, sweat is your nemesis if you want to keep warm when skiing. Plus, the long design provides extra warmth through your legs, keeping your muscles warm to improve performance.

2) Changing Anywhere, Anytime

The Dryrobe Advance is designed with a full-length, double-sided zip that allows you to zip or unzip from both inside and outside.

There’s no need to size up when buying a Dryrobe – crafted with a deliberately oversized fit, it allows you to pull your arms inside for easy changing. Get dressed anywhere without sacrificing privacy or warmth.

3) Weather Protection for Spectators and Coaches

It’s not just racers who benefit. A Dryrobe makes an ideal coat when you’re spectating at events. If you’re a family member watching your ski racer, keeping warm and dry can keep the experience fun rather than miserable. For coaches, a Dryrobe is a key piece of kit, allowing for both warmth and mobility.

If you’re planning to wear a Dryrobe as a coat, we advise sizing down, as they already have an oversized fit. For more information, read out guide on how to size a Dryrobe.

Dryrobe Benefits for Skiing and Daily Wear

1) Waterproof and Windproof Protection

The outer shell fabric is waterproof up to 10,000mm with heat-sealed seams and a backed zip to ensure water won’t get in. A Dryrobe keeps snow, rain and wind out whilst keeping heat in, making it great for all outdoor activities. Even days out in the miserable British weather become tolerable in a Dryrobe.

2) Intelligent Design Features

Two fleece-lined external zip pockets keep your hands warm, whilst an internal waterproof zip pocket is perfect for your phone and wallet. The large hood is lined with synthetic lambswool to keep your head warm and dry.

Certain Dryrobe designs have adjustable sleeve cuffs to keep heat in. The Advance range also features a split leg design to allow for easier movement, keeping your legs free for walking and hiking around the mountain.

3) Quick-Drying and Breathable

The advanced back2skin™ technology uses a vegan-friendly synthetic lambswool lining made from recycled materials.  It’s been specially designed to wick water away from your skin, helping you dry quicker. Breathable to 3000 g/m²/d, you can use your Dryrobe multiple times throughout the day as it dries rapidly between uses – crucial for multi-race days!

Caring for Your Dryrobe

Want your Dryrobe to last? Here’s how to look after it properly:

  • Dusting: Designed to rarely need washing, most of the time you can simply brush dirt off your Dryrobe as soon as it dries. You can also hand wash or wipe down your garment with a damp cloth.
  • Washing: Machine washing should be avoided as much as possible as this will age your garment and shorten the lifespan. Wash inside out in a laundry bag on a delicate cycle at no more than 30 degrees. Use a technical cleaning detergent and do not use any fabric softeners as this will damage the waterproof coating.
  • Drying: Air dry at room temperature. Dry flat and do NOT tumble dry.
  • Storage: Hang your Dryrobe or store in one of the special Dryrobe compression bags available on their website. Only store your Dryrobe once you’re sure it’s fully dry.
